Merel Karhof, born in the Netherlands (1978), lives and works alternately in Amsterdam and London. From a young age she lived regularly for longer periods in different European countries and travels frequently. Traveling offers her the opportunity to sharpen her curiosity and work with local craftsman. It continues to inspire her to make products in a dialogue with her environment.
With her designs she reveals the unnoticed and creates awareness of obvious things, such as the daily color of the water in Venice, or the urban wind, which she uses as an energy source to knit scarves. In her work the focus is on the process. Through her researching way of working, she develops her own tools and products, which function as 'three-dimensional sketchbooks' that visualize her studies.
She presented her work at exhibitions in London, Milan, Venice and China and in 2018 the Zuiderzeemuseum (NL) bought her ‘Tanning Lab’ for their permanent collection.
